As a design competition for the new Rutland District & Family Courthouse, the building's physical form references geometric simplicity of Vermont's nineteenth century courthouse in a contemporary manner. Native Vermont materials such as slate, marble, brick and maple woodwork link the front facade with the surrounding area. As a contemporary piece of architecture, the design addresses both the pragmatic obstacles of urban design and the community spirit inherent within civic buildings.
