MILTON SCHOOL

1999 AIA Excellence in Architecture Award

The Herrick Avenue School project involved a 75,000 sq. ft. addition and over 100,000 sq. ft. renovation to an existing Elementary and Middle School facility. Exterior wall systems are expressed honestly; brick veneer panels cladding the addition "float" where as the concrete block walls of the gymnasium are revealed as load bearing. Large areas of south facing glazing allow for solar gain in winter, while broad overhangs shade and reduce cooling loads in warmer months. Clerestory windows in the gym are operable and facilitate "chimney effect" ventilation.
